PhoneAgent![]() Navigation: Main page Author: Anonymous I needed a phone number. PhoneAgent runs an internet service promising a search for $1.00 with a guarantee to refund the $1.00 if they do not have the information. This turns out to be a credit for another search. In addition, because I chose to try the service for $1.00 (instead of the one time use fee of $4.95) they automatically enrolled me in their monthly service for $18.95 with the provision that I could cancel by calling within 7 days (small print notice). The information search for the phone number failed. I proceeded with the search because the site indicated they had the information. Once I committed to the search for $1.00 and the joining of the service for $18.95, the search came up with phone number "unavailable". This was after the site had indicated it was available, prior to allowing the $1.00 charge. I requested the $1.00 refund and expected this also indicated I did not want their monthly service. What actually occurred was a credit, despite the word refund being used on the site, and within 2 weeks my credit card was automatically billed for the $18.95 monthly service. I have disputed the 2 charges with my credit card company and the $1.00 charge was credited. The $18.95 charge was only credited for $1.00 by the company, leaving a $17.95 charge for a service that was not wanted, from a company that could not provide the information after indicating they had the information on the very first experience with the company. The website for this company is designed for deception and all the intricacies of the transaction are in smaller print or poorly worded, such as using the word "refund" when "credit" for another search is what is actually promised. The details of having to call in to cancel the monthly service are in smaller print as well.
